This year’s Chicago Auto Show spoke volumes about an industry that is particularly sensitive to the smallest consumer trend while proving always adept at responding with new and exciting products.
One of the most obvious things I saw at this year’s show was the continued emergence of the crossover segment.
First it was minivans then it was SUVs – now it is the crossover that seems to be the growth category.
Consumers who want the people-hauler capabilities of a minivan and the higher seating position of an SUV, but prefer a sleeker, more car-like package have begun migrating to the crossover.
This year’s show had several crossovers that I feel have really pushed the bar. Here are some of my favorites from this year’s Auto Show.
Audi Q7
With unmistakable Audi styling, the Q7 is a large, luxurious crossover that offers seating for up to seven passengers. The Q7 buyer can choose between a V6 and V8 engine. All Q7s feature Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system.
The Q7 is decked out with many amenities, including a luxurious interior that shows Audi went to great lengths in its design and craftsmanship of this crossover. Those desiring an upscale crossover will not be disappointed with the Q7. The price range is $40,000 - $60,000.
BMW X3
If you’re looking for a small crossover that performs like a sport sedan, the BMW X3 will fulfill your requirements nicely. A strong inline six-cylinder engine powers the X3.
Based on the popular 3-series sport sedan, the X3 features BMW’s X-Drive all-wheel-drive system. The X3 won’t be confused for anything but a BMW. As is the case with any BMW, the X3 is agile and athletic, with a price of about $38,000.
Ford Edge
The all-new Edge should give Ford a much-needed shot in the arm. I really like Edge’s muscular stance and massive grille. Along with excellent curb appeal, Edge is stacked with a powerful V6 engine and a roomy cabin.
The ride is smooth and quiet. I was very impressed with Edge’s refined road feel. Edge features a roomy and versatile cabin with seating for up to five passengers. The price range is $25,000 - $30,000.
Hyundai Veracruz
Not yet in showrooms, the handsome, midsize Veracruz will debut later this year as a 2008 model. Take a close look at Veracruz and you’ll be amazed at the level of refinement and amenities offered.
Veracruz is powered by a strong V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Veracruz offers seating for up to seven passengers and it features a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. Pricing has not been announced, but Hyundai infers that the Veracruz will provide “attainable luxury.”
Mazda CX-7
If you must have a sporty crossover but can’t afford the X3, Mazda’s CX-7 looks sleek and is fun to drive. The CX-7 borrows sporty design cues from the Miata and RX-8. A peppy, supercharged four-cylinder engine powers the CX-7.
The CX-7’s engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and power is sent to either the front or all four wheels. The CX-7 seats up to five passengers comfortably. The price range is $24,000 - $28,000.
Volvo XC90
I consider Volvo’s XC90 to be the safest and most family friendly midsize premium crossover on the market. The XC90 is powered by either an inline six-cylinder or V8 engine. The six is quite capable while the V8 adds significant fun to the equation. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard and power is sent to either the front or all four wheels.
With seating for up to seven passengers, the XC90 features a comfortable interior with high quality materials. The XC90 delivers a nice, refined car-like ride with a price tag of about $36,000 - $49,000.
