Golden Pothos vine is ideal for hanging because it offers an easy-to-care-for cascade of green and yellow leaves.
Bring the green indoors for fall
Easy-to-grow plants are a good place to start
October 7, 2009

While the leaves fall off the trees and all that is green turns to brown as autumn comes upon us, we will need to get our fill of foliage indoors during our requisite fall/winter hibernation.

Not only do houseplants bring beauty and freshen the air in our homes, some of the simpler species require little maintenance and little sun, making them easier to grow for novice planters during the darker months. To get a daily dose of green in your home, check out the details from About.com about some houseplants that will withstand rookie mistakes while surviving and thriving in their indoor existence.

Lucky Bamboo: As a popular plant for offices and a nifty gift to get friends and family, the fortune and luck bamboo supposedly brings is undeniably one if its most appealing characteristics. As a key element in feng shui, the plant is virtually indestructible, enduring any light condition and surviving in vases filled with water or in soil. As a low-maintenance plant, it can live in almost any environment but especially thrives in temperatures between 65 and 90 degrees, out of direct sunlight, and placed in non-chlorinated water.

Succulents: Because these plants store water in their leaves, stems or roots, they can survive the winter with once-a-month watering as long as they are watered generously during the summer. Succulents favor bright spots, so place them in a south-acing window. Aloe, agave and cacti are some of the more well-known succulents that make particularly great display plants.

Golden Pothos Vine: Ideal for hanging, this popular plant pick is favored for its dependability and its beautifully cascading formation of green and yellow leaves. The vine’s preferred conditions for prosperity consist of bright, indirect light, moist soil throughout the growing period, and warm temperatures. It is an extremely simple plant to propagate and maintain in your home, and you can even train the vines to climb wooden mounts or moss-covered sticks.

Spider Plant: Robust and easy to grow, seasoned gardeners suggest these as an indispensable addition to a hanging plant collection. They can be potted into baskets or placed on columns, and as long as there is adequate water (liberal amounts during the summer and low in the winter) and fertilizer, it will yield a delightful display within two years.

Snake Plant/Mother-in-Law’s Tongue: The strongest of all houseplants, these are deemed the best for beginners. Only succumbing to death if there is way too much water or none at all, these plants are both tall- with leaves ranging from 3 to 4 feet – and stiff. Fabulous in floor or table-top displays, green growers need only place them in bright light, warm climates, and let the soil dry between monthly watering.
