Elmhurst

Elmhurst residents love a parade.

This west suburban village, 20 miles west of the Loop and immediately west of the I-294, hosts the third largest St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Chicagoland, as well as Memorial Day and Fourth of July parades. The community also hosts a popular Pet Parade where residents march alongside their animals, and Elmfest in June.

An older, well established community, Elmhurst is home to the first hospital in DuPage County. Now known as Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare, it was founded in 1926 as Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.

In May 2008, the facility recently started construction on a new 50-acre campus that will be the home of a new hospital with all private rooms, a heart hospital, specialized outpatient centers, a women’s pavilion and cancer center, and physicians offices. The new campus is expected to open in the fall of 2011.

Elmhurst also has several museums, including the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art (polished stones and gemstones), the Elmhurst Art Museum and the Elmhurst Historical Museum. The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra also adds to community culture.

Elmhurst is home to Elmhurst College a private liberal arts school with just under 3,000 students. It was founded in 1871 and is affiliated with the United Church of Christ.

Children are served by Unit School District 205. The average composite ACT score in 2007 was 22.9 and the mean SAT scores from 2007 were 612 for critical reading, 642 for math and 602 in writing.

“Every year when the elementary school children compete to be ‘Mayor for the Day,’ their letters over and over again address that they feel safe in Elmhurst,” says Dare Messina, a resident and Realtor with L.W. Reedy Real Estate in Elmhurst. “The children’s testament exemplifies the dedication that the leaders of Elmhurst have for the community and its future.”

Elmhurst is an affluent community, with an average household income of about $100,000.

The average listing price for a single-family detached residence with four bedrooms is now just over $700,000, while a two-bedroom home ranges around $300,000. Some new homes have been built in the last five years, but the majority of homes are still 50 to 100 years old, preserving much of the town‘s original structure.

Housing has changed dramatically over the last decade. Three- to five-bedroom homes have replaced many two- and three-bedroom homes in the area and townhouses have also become more common.

“I call Elmhurst ‘my little Utopia,’ says Karen Geddeis, a resident of Elmhurst and director of communications for District 205. “The best thing about Elmhurst is that it has a small-town feel, but is close to everything--the city, airport, and expressways. I really enjoy the fact that I can walk to the movies, good restaurants, and entertainment.”
