Winning buildings
The City of Chicago's Landmarks Commission has announced 17 honorees in
2009's Preservation Excellence Awards. The awards are given to
acknowledge efforts in restoring city landmarks and preserving the
city’s architectural and cultural heritage. The laurels are bestowed by
the Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Zoning and Land
Use Planning. Only properties that have been designated by the City
Council as individual Chicago landmarks or that are within a Chicago
Landmark District are eligible. See photos of the commercial structures
that won this year.
After: The Haskell Barker and Atwater Buildings on South Wabash are among the last groups of small-scale loft buildings built just after the Chicago Fire of 1871. All three were designed by prominent post-fire architects. The three underwent extensive renovation and cleaning.
