You say modern, I say traditional
January 9, 2009

Allison and her husband Garren are complete opposites. She is a financial analyst with a taste for the hip and urban, while he has a woodworking and guitar-making business and tends toward the traditional and outdoorsy. While opposites attract in this marriage, they certainly have unattractive results when it comes to home decor.

Specifically, the couple had a family room that was seriously outdated -- complete with '80s patterned couches and beanbag chairs, and they couldn't agree on how to update it. Allison wanted a contemporary, elegant room, while Garren wanted a traditional, rustic space.

Hoping I could mediate a solution, the couple called me in to see if I could combine their two totally different design styles and keep the peace in their home. So I called in my crew and geared up to turn the stark family room into a comfy, tasteful space in which Allison and Garren could both relax.

The room had good bones and great bay windows, but was lacking in style. So, to kick off the project, I started by getting rid of the style-less beanbag chairs, the dated couches -- and pretty much everything else in the room that wasn't nailed down.

Next, I painted the entire space in a soft cream and created a feature wall consisting of the existing fireplace with a new surround of linear, large format slate tiles. Next to the fireplace, I installed some warm, wood cabinetry that holds media equipment and a 52-inch television on an extendable arm mount for easy swiveling.

I got my inspiration for the rest of the room from the colors on this feature wall. I took the taupe, moss, stone, bark and rust from the tiles and used these colors for all of the fabrics and furnishings in the space.

On one side of the room, I created a main furniture grouping consisting of a modern L-shaped sectional in taupe-colored velvet, two beautiful lounge chairs in a multi-colored paisley of brown, rust and taupe, a small round wood table, and an ottoman in distressed butterscotch leather. On the other side of the room I put in a gorgeous new wood desk that doubles as a buffet table with a green and paisley chair.

On the bay windows I merged the sleek and the rustic by putting up a beautiful two-layer window treatment. The first layer consists of grass-like woven blinds that have a handcrafted quality, and the second layer is made up of modern raw silk drapes.

To light up the room, I chose recessed lighting and a few traditional lamps. I also added some contemporary pizzazz with a crystal chandelier above the round table in the seating area.

After adding some accents and accessories, including a big area rug, a few occasional tables and a host of pillows, this room was finally complete.

By choosing fixtures, furnishings, colors and textures that blend contemporary style for Allison with traditional comfort for Garren, I designed a compromise for two opposites that is uncompromising in its beauty. Now that's divine!
