Remodeled homes on tour around Chicago
May 18, 2008

Seven professionally renovated homes in five suburbs will be open for viewing this weekend during the third annual Remodel Chicagoland home tour.

"Homeowners are seeking innovative strategies and creative ideas on how they can transform everyday rooms and ordinary areas into dramatic living spaces," said Lisa Pickell, president of the HBAGC, a council of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago, the event's sponsor. "Walking through these distinctively different homes can spark your ambitions and suggest colorful new concepts and inventive approaches that you can apply to your own home. There's an assortment of renovation projects on display, representing a good cross-section of styles and budgets."

In a Barrington home, the kitchen and adjacent laundry room were combined into one large space by Insignia Kitchen and Bath Design Group Ltd. The project included two bi-level islands, all-new high-end appliances and an armoire-style refrigerator.

A Highland Park empty-nester house was built in the early 1980s. Design Construction Concepts Ltd. opened up several walls and created a more open floor.

A River Forest Mediterranean-style residence received an 800-square-foot addition, consisting of a kitchen, an expanded casual dining area and a finished basement by Oak Design & Construction.

Pollard Construction Co. fashioned a new kitchen, breakfast room addition, family room, 3-car garage, hot tub and a gazebo in a River Forest home built in 1938.

An environmentally friendly one-level home in Schaumburg was customized to better accommodate the owners' child with special needs by Remodel One Inc. and Sevvonco Inc.

A 6,000-square-foot South Barrington house was modernized with a new two-story screened-in porch (overlooking an Infinity Edge pool and lake) and an all-glass three-story central atrium (with a koi pond and waterfall) by Doomis Custom Builders.

An old residence in South Barrington, with an outdated master bathroom, was modernized by Great Northern Kitchen & Bath, which designed a shower with a built-in seat and rounded stairs.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $10 online www.RemodelChicagoland.com or $15 when purchased on-site at any of the seven tour locations. Admission is free for children 12 and younger. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to HomeAid Chicago.
