Where will dogs be welcome?
May 14, 2008

It’s a dog’s world, and there’s some new pet friendly concepts to bark about in the Windy City housing market as more and more developments are creating amenities that cater to buyers who are dog lovers.

At The Huron, a 42-unit luxury boutique condominium high-rise planned at 4 E. Huron Street two blocks west of Michigan Avenue’s “Magnificent Mile,” dog lovers and their pooches will enjoy the ultimate luxury—a heated “doggy run,” tucked away like a private pet condo.

“The doggy run is very private, so it won’t infringe on your dogless neighbors,” said co-developer Paul Stanley, principal of State & Huron LLC. “Off the lobby you’ll find a heated garage with deeded parking spaces, secure indoor bicycle storage, and our doggy run for those rainy days or cold winter nights when neither you nor your dog want to go out.”

The 28-story Huron is planned as a very exclusive, signature building designed with a distinctive contemporary architecture in the highly desired locale, on the northeast corner of Huron and State streets overlooking Holy Name Cathedral,” said Stanley.

Designed by the architectural firm of Solomon Cordwell Buenz, the one-of-kind condominium high-rise will feature only 42 residences—only one, two or three units per floor—all with spacious terraces. There also will be two penthouses, plus indoor parking for 74 cars.

Base prices at The Huron range from $992,000 to $4.858 million for residences with 1,676 to 5,819 square feet of space. Twenty percent of the units have been sold.

On the top floor of the building is a private health club complete with steam room, sauna, and changing rooms, plus a year round pool and deck surrounded by fabulous views.

“And after you walk the dog, when you really want to get away from it all, you’ll find a Zen contemplation garden on the rooftop as well as grills for cooking out, hammocks and a hot tub where you can relax and watch the sunset in amazing peace right in the heart of the city,” Stanley said.

The Huron’s sales center at 4 E. Huron is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, please call 312-446-7373 or visit www.thehuron.com.

Dog lovers also are being pampered by developers at the following new condo, townhome and single-family home developments in Chicago:

• 1720 S. Michigan. A pet friendly dog run heads a list of building amenities at this 33-story new-construction high-rise in the South Loop, which also features a fully staffed 24-hour doorman and a bicycle storage room.

At 1720 S. Michigan Avenue, 418 units already are closed and sales have exceeded the 90-percent mark, according to developer Colin Kihnke, president of CMK Development Corp.

Only 59 condominium residences remain for sale at the 498-unit tower. “All the available units are ready for occupancy,” Kihnke said. Prices start at $196,900.

Fifteen model units are on display at 1720 S. Michigan Ave. The models and sales center are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 312-376-0600 or visit www.1720michigan.com. • Opera Lofts. This 93-unit loft development at 2545 S. Dearborn on the southern edge of the South Loop features a substantial dog run, according to the developer LOACQ, LLC.

Opera Lofts are underway at the Lyric Opera’s former design and warehouse center. Units feature soaring ceiling heights and high-end finishes. Prices range from $249,900 for a 1-bedroom-plus-work-space loft to more than $800,000 for a penthouse. First occupancies are underway. • Cornelia Court. A one-acre green space on the eastern and southern borders of the Cornelia Court townhome development serves as a spacious dog park and provides plenty of room for Rover to run.

Anchor General, developer of the 63-unit community at 3001 W. Cornelia Ave. in West Roscoe Village, is planting additional maple and oak trees in the wooded area. The entire perimeter of the property is dotted with mature trees and landscaped private front yards.

Cornelia Court also features a new 10,650-square-foot private park nestled within the 2.4-acre development at Cornelia and Sacramento avenues on the Northwest Side, said Steven V. Frytz of Anchor General, co-developer of the project with Dewey Suster through Cornelia Court LLC.

Eight luxury townhomes are ready for late spring occupancy at Cornelia Court. Buyers seeking to move in immediately at the $28-million development may choose a two-bedroom, 2.5-bath townhome with a family room, 2,242 square feet of space and a two-car attached garage priced at $479,900.

Another choice for immediate move-in is a four-bedroom, 3.5-bath townhome with 2,904 square feet of living area and a 2.5 car attached garage priced at $629,900.

A professionally decorated and furnished three-story model townhome is on display at 3009 W. Cornelia. It is open Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Call 773-477-3030, or visit www.corneliacourt.com.
